Both...shoot enough to sight in weapons and make a note what ammo it's zeroed for, but not much recreational shooting these days.

Re: Shooting or Hoarding...???

More Hoarding than shooting...

I used to go to the range about every weekend or every other atleast...

No I go once a month or about every 6 weeks.... I notice, I'm also a lot more conservative with the ammo.... No more trigger happy...

Used to spend 200-300 rounds of .223 and same or more of .9mm and .45...

Now I'll spend like 3-4 mags at most of .223 just to keep the feel of it...

And I'm plinking with the 10/22 and a bit with the .308 bolt action...

Haven't spent any 7.62 in awhile...

Re: Shooting or Hoarding...???

Hoarding at the moment simply because the ammo is hard to replace. I just posted in the Wally World ammo thread how they had no .357 Mag/38 Special (I have a Ruger .357 Mag) and only 1 box of 40 S&W that I purchased (have a 40 S&W semiauto too). If I knew that the ammo was easily replaced at a decent cost, then I would go to the range more often.

Re: Shooting or Hoarding...???

Definitely more hoarding than shooting. I use to go to the range every weekend, sometimes both Saturday and Sunday, and make an all-day affair of it. I went through a LOT of ammo in a day. Now, ammo is sky-high and availability/future availability iffy. I stocked up well enough before ammo prices went through the ceiling, but I can't afford to replace it at current prices, even if I can find what I want. So, I'm not shooting my favorite rifles as often or shooting through as much ammo when I do. (I reload for the non-milsurp ones, but even that's expensive these days.)

Drumblebum 03-01-2009 03:50 PM

Re: Shooting or Hoarding...???

Thankfully, I bought a shytload when it was still available. I'm very conservative with my .223 since it is not nearly available enough for a decent enough price. I managed to pick up an unexpected case of 9mm WWB recently, so I figure it's a good idea to shoot my XD as much as possible as I have needed the practice.

I did manage to take the head clean off a small lizard at 15 yards yesterday, so I guess I'm getting a little better.

I've been shooting a lot of .22 with my daughter. I want her to improve her skill as much as possible with her new rifle.

Other than those factors, I've been sitting on it. (Ammo, that is).

Both. I keep shooting so I'm not "cold" if SHTF.

I'm shooting my reloads, but the ranges have gotten strange, so I guess I'm hoarding.

Hoarding. Although going out with the 10/22 is a good idea. Anybody have a recommendation for a scope for a Ruger 10/22?

Re: Shooting or Hoarding...???

I've done more shooting these days, especially since the purchase of my AR-15. But, I'm also hoarding more than usual. There was a gun show in my area this weekend that I missed due to work. But, there is another one next weekend. I plan on picking up a .22 LR conversion kit for the AR (probably about $180 with a mag included) just for some cheap plinking and a ton of 22 LR ammo if the price is right. I'll probably pick up other ammo as well depending on the prices.

Hoarding sounds so selfish - accumulating large quantities for future shooting. There now, I feel better already!
Take care,

Second that. I want to scope at least one of mine. Now that I think about it... I believe there is a thread here already from a couple of weeks ago on this very subject...

For me, the answer was a BSA red-dot sight on my 10/22. A better solution than either iron sights or a scope.

I have a Simmons 22 Mag 4x32 scope Model 511010 on an Ithaca Model X15 .22. Great scope, comes with rings - may work on a Ruger 10-22.

Re: Shooting or Hoarding...???

it seems more ppl are hoarding than shooting, who are those people taking up the lanes at the range? I went to my local range for the first time in 3 or 4 weeks, all 18 lanes were occupied, and some of the lanes have 2-3 person each. At least 10 more were waiting outside for a lane to open up, wait time for me was 1 hr. I didn't get to shoot any this weekend b/c didn't want to wait for that long:s15:

Hadn't thought of that. Is there any reason to go to the range with such a set-up? I hear that laser sites sometimes disappear in heavy sunshine.

Dunno. I've only shot it at an indoor range. Perhaps other members could comment on the effect of sunlight on red-dot sights?

I like it a lot!

People are shooting more... for me, it's like a frozen tundra outside so no rifle shooting in months.

I'm not a big fan of the crappy indoor pistol range around here. When I do go, I shoot A LOT of .22lr now. Not much of anythign else. A few mags but thats it. I did get the 5.45x39 AR so if it ever warms up I'll be shooting a crap load of that,.

I read this forum and hear of folks prospecting for silver in old rolls of halves and dollars.

I think I'm going to start diving in the local lakes for ammo and metal!

Re: Shooting or Hoarding...???

Hell, wish I'd have time to shoot; just hoarding when I've got the extra cash on hand when in the local hardware store but even then at a $ a pop for '06, I can't justify 2 sec's of gratification versus a soda for my daughter (= 45 sec of grat.). Nope, looking to go into reloading finally (what the *** was I waitin' for) and shooting just .22 to educate said daughter(s) and self pleasure as to what a correct sight picture is and ssssssssssqqqqqqqqqquuuuuuuuueeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzz, then jack another round in and repeat (can you believe I'm actually giving hour of thought into how to make a bullet trap behing said targets to retrieve said lead to remelt for my pistol reloads) what has AMERIKA come to.
Lately, hoping CMP doesn't loose my 1K order of ammo while I fester about if I ordered enough, hell, charge it (I can't but believe they'll forgive such a minor oversight on my judgement for a price if I have to go br, hell they wonh't believe me, I'm a responsible upright citizen).

A little bit of shooting, and as much hoarding as I can find and afford.

Re: Shooting or Hoarding...???

I made it a general rule that if I wanna shoot, I must be able to keep twice as much. Since right now I (actively) shoot a 9mm, for every 100 rounds I shoot, I purchase 200 rounds to keep ... however they fell out of the truck during some icy road conditions today.

My bad.

I heard an amusing statement not too long ago about how much is enough.

There are, maybe, two situations where you might have too much ammo.

1) Your on Fire.

2) Your Drowning.
